Good Courses For Teachers - Why They Are ImportantTeaching is a competitive business as more and more candidates compete for the valuable teaching places. A very wise choice then is to improve your skill level and qualifications at crucial points in your career. The field of education is one of the fields where qualifications matter greatly so any amount of time and money you invest in your education is time and money very spent. So if you are looking for your next course a question you may ask yourself is: How do I decide on the next teaching qualification for me? How do I decide what will be the ideal teaching course? We’ll now take a moment to look at this. Recently, a Master Educator was approached and ask for her opinion and what she felt would be the best course for teachers for someone entering the profession today or looking to improve their teaching knowledge and effectiveness. She said that obviously any course should first focus on giving the student mastery of subject matter they will be teaching. In depth mastery of the subject is important and is the basis of being able to be an effective teacher and facilitator. However, at the same time, she said it will be important that the course provides a good grasp of pedagogy – the science and principles of teaching - incidentally this word comes from the name of an ancient Greek slave paidagogos who took his master’s children to school every day. Another thing which she highlighted as important is that the course should give a good foundation in the skill of classroom management which gives you the ability to create a class environment most suited for facilitating learning. Another thing to look for in a course is the inclusion of content on how to integrate technology to the classroom. Since classroom technology – ranging from technical presentation aids to the use online learning – is such a hot topic at the moment, it would be a good subject to look out for in your future teachers course. This experienced teacher also spoke about including ethics into teacher training courses, but not everybody would agree with this. She summarized her feelings by explaining that when teachers are given a strong pedagogical foundation, they are later on able to be more creative with their teaching techniques. The strong pedagogical grasp of their teacher training course, will help them immediately see the implications of any (trendy) new method they come across and see how they can apply it to their particular setting. Since classroom management is normally a source of concern for most new teachers, if a course can give you practical insight into how this works, you’ll find yourself progressing at a faster rate than your other newly-graduated peers. Look for as many of these aspects as you can when selecting a course for teachers. A good course will enable you to become a better, happier and more effective educator than you are today. |
